Animals on our Farmstead

What do you think of when they think of a homestead? A red barn? Rolling fields? A beautiful, thriving garden? Animals. – goats, pigs, chickens, cows, llamas, turkeys and ducks.

We were fortunate enough to have chickens in our suburban yard – about 5 times the number we were supposed to, but who is counting? When we came out to Colorado we knew chickens were a must. It took about 6 months before we started our flock – we had to get through that first winter, but we ordered chicks and proceeded to “figure it out.”

This is my MO for sure. No matter what we’re talking about. If I didn’t function that way I would probably NEVER do anything or make any forward movement on anything.

Then of course the chicks and ducklings were at our local farm store and, well… we ended up with some ducklings. I ADORE ducks! They’re crazy messy, super stinky, but once they were big enough to we put them on the pond and they were in heaven. There are so many resources out there to gather information so I won’t preach about the right way to add animals, or care for them, or any of that, but what I will do is link the resources I used to gather my knowledge and still refer to today when I have a question.
